  6. 1  Introduction
  7.  
  8. Tired of having two or three or even four icons at the bottom 
  9. of your screen monitoring different aspects of your computer?
  10. If so, then SysUse is for you.  SysUse is a single performance 
  11. monitor program that displays the current utilization levels 
  12. of all four of your computer's main resources: CPU, memory, 
  13. system (Windows) resources, and disk space.  The levels are 
  14. displayed textually when the SysUse window is open, and as 
  15. gauges (in the above order) when the window is minimized.  
  16. SysUse is very efficient (especially when minimized) and takes 
  17. very little time away from your other applications.

  19. SysUse is a shareware program so you are welcome to try it out 
  20. free of charge.  However, if you like it and decide to keep it
  21. on your system, you are obligated to register your copy by 
  22. paying $5.95 U.S. to the author at the address given below.  
  23. Registration entitles you to legally use this and all future 
  24. releases of SysUse, notification of future releases, and 
  25. technical support.

  27. 2  Usage
  28.  
  29. SysUse was intended to be launched from your win.ini file or 
  30. Windows 3.1 StartUp group.  Load it first (i.e. before other 
  31. applications) to get the most accurate readings for CPU and 
  32. memory utilization.  This is because CPU speed and total 
  33. available memory are initialized when SysUse first comes up.
  34. Also, give SysUse a minute or so to adjust to your CPU's speed.
  35.  
  36. Two commands are available from SysUse's system menu: About
  37. SysUse, and Options.  About SysUse displays the usual program 
  38. and author info.  Options displays a dialog box from which 
  39. the following program options may be set:
  40.  
  41.      1.  Recalibrate CPU - Causes the CPU speed to be 
  42.      reinitialized.  Select this if your CPU level appears
  43.      to be incorrect (e.g. is greater than 0 even though
  44.      nothing else is running.)
  45.  
  46.      2.  Compact Memory - Calls the GlobalCompact Windows
  47.      function to compact global memory.  Select this if
  48.      Windows reports there is insufficient memory to run 
  49.      an application even though there appears to be a lot.
  50.      It may be that the free memory is just not contiguous.

  52.      3.  Drives - Selects one or more disk drives to be 
  53.      monitored.  Be careful when selecting floppy drives.  
  54.      They're pretty slow!
  55.  
  56.      4.  Update - Selects the update period for the SysUse
  57.      window and icon.  Usage levels may be recalculated 
  58.      and displayed every 1, 2, or 3 seconds.  1 second is
  59.      the default.

  61.      5.  Stay In Front - Causes the SysUse window (or icon)
  62.      to stay on top of other windows on the desktop.
  63.  
  64.      6.  OK - Exits the Options dialog box.

  66. Upon closing SysUse or exiting Windows, the above options 
  67. and the position of the SysUse window are saved to your 
  68. win.ini file.  These settings are automatically used the
  69. next time SysUse is launched.

  71. 3  Legal Rights
  72.  
  73. SysUse is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, 
  74. either express or implied.  No liability is assumed from 
  75. any damage or loss resulting from the use of this program.
  76. You are free to copy and share SysUse with others, as long 
  77. as the two files SYSUSE13.EXE and SYSUSE13.TXT are distributed 
  78. together and not modified in any way.

  80. Shareware distributors ARE permitted to include SysUse with 
  81. their distributions, but any fee charged by the distributor 
  82. DOES NOT cover the $5.95 registration fee that you the user 
  83. owe to author if you decide to keep and use SysUse.  Businesses, 
  84. Government agencies, and other organizations may purchase a 
  85. site license by contacting the author for additional information.

  136. 6  Other Shareware Programs
  137.  
  138. Two other shareware programs are currently available from the 
  139. author.  
  140.  
  141. PinUp Notes is an electronic post-it notes program for Windows 
  142. 3.0 and 3.1.  The program consists of a single icon from which 
  143. both text and bitmap notes may be generated with a single mouse 
  144. click.  Text notes allow you to enter brief notes or reminders 
  145. from the keyboard.  Bitmap notes allow you to copy regions of 
  146. the screen to a note window.  All notes are saved across sessions, 
  147. and may be printed, cut/pasted, edited, and archived.

  149. WinFind is a file search program for Window 3.1 only.  You may
  150. search for files based on file name as well as file contents.
  151. You may restrict the search to certain subdirectories and file
  152. name extensions.  Once found, files may launched with the
  153. application with which they are associated.  The last 10 files
  154. launched are also maintained on a menu for quicker launching
  155. in the future.
